The South African public should not be lulled into a false sense of security regarding the matter of load shedding this winter. While there is a brief respite with regards a lack of electricity to the nation, there is every indication this winter that ESKOM will need to revert to power cuts as the colder weather sets in.
Statistics indicate that South Africans consume between 30 – 40% more electricity during the winter months. This is due to an increase in the use of items such as heaters, tumble driers, electric blankets and the likes.
In a recent SAFM report, the energy intensive user group of SA, comprising the country’s biggest energy consumers, including mines, questioned the viability of ESKOM’s suspension of load shedding. A spokesman for the group commented that “if ESKOM puts every new bit of capacity online with no delays and the country’s economy only grows by four percent instead of the government’s projected six percent, in 2014 we will have a (smaller) reserve margin then we have today”.
